Ciprofloxacin is a bacteria-killing antibiotic drug effective against infections caused by several types of bacteria. Ciprofloxacin inhibits DNA replication and prevents spread of the bacteria. Although no specific infectious agent is known to be the cause of IBD, antibiotics like ciprofloxacin can be used as long-term therapy for some IBD sufferers because of their ability to reduce bacteria in the intestine and suppress the intestine’s immune system. Ciprofloxacin is used specifically to treat patients with active Crohn’s disease and patients with pouchitis, inflammation of the internal pouch created in ileal-pouch and anastomosis surgery. Ciprofloxacin is generally taken orally, and can be taken with or without food. Side effects are mild and rare with use of ciprofloxacin, so it is generally considered safer than metronidazole for use. These side effects may include, but are not limited to, headache, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and rash. |
